Matthew Sardon is a Catholic author, theologian, teacher, speaker, lyricist and music producer based in Melbourne, Australia. Through books, articles, theological reflections and original music, he seeks to communicate the beauty, coherence and spiritual depth of the Catholic faith in ways that lead people towards a deeper knowledge and love of Jesus Christ.
His theological work stands at the intersection of Sacred Scripture, Catholic doctrine, patristic theology and lived Christian discipleship, drawing from the riches of both the Eastern and Western traditions of the Church. He writes for ordinary Catholics who desire to understand the faith more deeply, enter more fully into the spiritual life and allow the truths of the Gospel to shape their prayer, choices and relationship with God.
Matthew has undertaken extensive formal theological education through the University of Divinity, with focused study in biblical theology, patristic anthropology and the Church’s understanding of salvation as participation in the divine life. His research and writing have been particularly shaped by the doctrine of theosis: the transforming work of grace by which the human person is healed, elevated and drawn into communion with God.
His theology has also been formed within the living worship and ministry of the Church. Years of immersion in her liturgical and sacramental life, including sustained participation in both the Roman and Byzantine rites, have given his work a deeply sacramental and incarnational character. For Matthew, the study of theology belongs within a life of prayer, repentance, conversion and participation in the mysteries of Christ.
Matthew is actively engaged in Catholic teaching, catechesis and adult faith formation and is currently in formation for holy orders. His writing draws upon pastoral experience as well as theological study and is guided by the conviction that theology should illuminate the mind, form the conscience, heal the human heart and strengthen the Church’s witness to the world.
This same mission now extends into music through Cinder & Chalice, the music apostolate through which Matthew writes lyrics and produces songs inspired by Scripture, Catholic theology and the realities of the spiritual life. Drawing inspiration from the biblical tradition of the Psalms, his music gives expression to prayer, suffering, repentance, mercy, conversion, hope and worship. He hopes these songs will accompany listeners through their own spiritual struggles, give language to their prayer and lift their hearts towards God.
His writing and music are two expressions of the same Catholic apostolate. Through the written word, Matthew seeks to unfold the truths of the faith with clarity and theological depth. Through lyrics and music, he seeks to carry those truths into the imagination and the heart through poetry, melody and beauty. In both, his purpose is to help others encounter the faith as a living reality that heals, transforms and draws the human person into communion with Christ.
Matthew regards his writing as a Catholic publishing apostolate undertaken in service of Christ and His Church. He donates 100 per cent of the net author royalties he receives from his books to the Little Sisters of the Poor and their ministry of hospitality and care for elderly people in need.
His hope is that every work may bear fruit in the life of the person who receives it—and that every book may also bear fruit in the life of an elderly person welcomed, accompanied and cared for by the Sisters.
A Catholic Apostolate of Word and Music
This apostolate has grown from a lifelong love of the Catholic faith and a desire to share the treasure the Church has received: the truth of the Gospel, the riches of Sacred Scripture, the wisdom of the saints and the spiritual inheritance handed down through the centuries.
As an author, theologian and lifelong student of theology, I draw upon sustained study, prayer and ongoing postgraduate formation to explore the beauty, coherence and depth of the Catholic faith. My work is rooted in the teaching of the Church, which has formed my understanding of God, Scripture, the human person and the spiritual life. I write because this inheritance deserves to be known, contemplated and loved, and because the truths of the faith become most fruitful when they are allowed to shape the whole of life.
Through books, articles and theological reflections, I seek to make the riches of Catholic teaching accessible without diminishing their depth. I hope to illuminate Sacred Scripture, recover the spiritual wisdom of the saints and show how the doctrines of the Church speak directly to the deepest questions of the human heart. The subjects of my work range from theology and Scripture to prayer, conversion, suffering and the interior life, yet each arises from the same desire: to help others encounter Jesus Christ more deeply and discover the fullness of life found in Him.
I write for those who are searching for direction, for those seeking greater clarity in their faith and for those who desire to enter more deeply into the mysteries they already believe. I hope that my work will lead readers beyond knowledge alone and towards a faith more fully lived: a life shaped by prayer, strengthened by virtue, nourished by the sacraments and animated by love for God. If these writings help someone understand the faith more clearly, return to prayer, persevere through suffering or grow in friendship with Christ, then they have fulfilled their purpose.
That same mission now finds expression through music.
Through Cinder & Chalice, I write lyrics and produce music inspired by the same theological and spiritual truths that shape my books and articles. Music possesses a distinctive power to carry truth into the memory and the heart. It can give language to sorrow, awaken repentance, sustain hope and express the movements of the soul when ordinary speech reaches its limits. When joined to music, a truth that instructs the mind can also stir the affections, enter the imagination and remain with a person long after the final note has faded.
Sacred Scripture bears witness to this power in the Psalms. David brought the whole of his life before God in song: his praise and thanksgiving, his fear and grief, his repentance, his longing and his hope. Through music, he prayed, lamented, wrestled and worshipped. The songs born from his encounter with God became the prayer of Israel and, through the life of the Church, have continued to form the prayer of Christians across the centuries.
It is this tradition that inspires my music apostolate. I hope to create songs that help people speak honestly before God, recognise His presence within suffering, remember His mercy and lift their hearts towards Him. I want the music to accompany people through the realities of the spiritual life: through struggle and repentance, sorrow and healing, longing and surrender, gratitude and worship. Above all, I hope that each song gives the listener something true to carry into prayer and something beautiful that leads the heart towards God.
Writing and music are two expressions of the same apostolate. Through the written word, I seek to unfold the truths of the Catholic faith with clarity and depth. Through lyrics and music, I seek to give those truths another voice, allowing them to be encountered through poetry, melody and the movements of the heart.
Whether expressed through a book, an article, a theological reflection or a song, the purpose remains the same: to share a love for the Catholic faith, to draw from the wisdom of the Church and her saints, and to help others grow in their spiritual lives, in their knowledge of the truth and in their love for God.
Whatever good may come from this work belongs finally to Him.
